Waterville

The small seaside village of Waterville has often been referred to as the 'Jewel' on the famous Ring of Kerry.

Nestled on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, hugging the shores of Lough Currane (famous worldwide for salmon & specimen sea trout) and enjoying a magnificent backdrop of lush, rugged mountains, it is little wonder that Charlie Chaplin fell in love with this idyllic, picturesque location.

Chaplin returned to Waterville for many years with his wife Oona and their children, as, according to members of the Chaplin family, Waterville afforded him a tranquil haven where he could enjoy spending time with his family in relative anonymity. Many locals remember him strolling along the seafront promenade which runs along the centre of the village, his privacy always respected.

One of Chaplin's favourite pursuits while in Waterville was fishing on Lough Currane. His grandson Julien (a regular visitor to Waterville today) recounts a story of his grandfather having had a fruitless day on the lake, deciding to head to the fish shop in Caherciveen to buy some Salmon and return to the Butler Arms Hotel claiming that it was he who had caught them, an obvious indication that Chaplin was not only a comedian on screen, but also a bit of a joker in reality!

An Coireán

Go minic cloistear an focal 'Seoid' in úsáid ag daoine agus iad ag caint faoin sráidbhaile beag trá An Coireán ar Mhórchuaird Chiarraí. Suite ar imeall an tAigéan Atlantach, agus clú agus cáil ar Loch Currane ar fud an domhain de bharr bradán agus breac geal, agus leis na sléibhte garbha glasa mar chúlra, ní haon ionadh gur thit Charlie Chaplin i ngrá leis an áit álainn phictiúrtha seo.

D'fhill Chaplin ar an gCoireán bliain i ndiaidh bliana in éineacht lena bhean chéile Oonagh agus a bpáistí, mar, dar le daoine ó mhuintir Chaplin, thug An Coireán deis dó faoiseamh a fháil agus ám a chaitheamh lena chlann gan mórán aithne a bheith ag daoine air. Deir daoine áitiúla go bhfuil cuimhní acu de Charlie agus é ag siúl ar an bpromanáid a ritheann tré lár an sráidbhaile. Bhíodh meas i gcónaí ag daoine ar a phríobháideachas.

Ceann des na rudaí ba mhó a thaitin le Chaplin fad is a bhí sé ag teacht chun na háite ná a bheith ag iascaireacht ar Loch Currane. Tá scéal iontach ag a gharmhac Julien (a thagann ar cuairt go rialta chuig An Coireán), faoi lá amháin a bhí Charlie amuigh ar an Loch gan faic na fríde gabháilte aige; bheartaigh sé dul go Cathair Saidhbhín chuig an siopa éisc chun bradán a cheannach agus dul thar nais go dtí Ostán an Butler Arms agus a rá gurb é féin a bhí tar éis an bradán a ghabháil.

Léiríonn an scéal úd nach ar an scáileán amháin a bhí Chaplin ina fhuirseoir, bhíodh sé greannmhar go leor ina shaol pearsanta chomh maith.

The Butler Arms, one of Ireland’s best-known family-run hotels, is treasured for its air of luxury combined with a homely, intimate atmosphere. From the moment you arrive, you will bask in the warmest of Irish welcomes from the Huggard family, who have run the Butler Arms for four generations. The Butler Arms Hotel open in March 1884 just as a transatlantic cable was laid from New Foundland to the little village of Waterville. Martin and Mary Huggard bought the hotel in 1915, now as the first decade of the Twenty First Century draws to a close the confidence in the Butler Arms remains and it is now run by Louise and Paula Huggard, the fifth generation of hoteliers in the village.

There is no hotel in Ireland more steeped in family history and tradition than the Butler Arms. Guest become friends and they can choose to meet local people in the public bar.
